IPL 2021 is about to begin with few days to go for the first match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Banglore at Chennai. The teams are geared up with all their preparation and ready to play their second season of IPL during the pandemic with IPL coming back home this year. The stakes are high for the IPL always and its one of the biggest league tournament around the world.
Captaining any IPL team is a honor for players and it comes with many added responsibilities. Many of the star international players have not been able to perform so well as captain for different teams in the most prestigious league. In such immense pressure, this time there are 6 teams out of 8 having Indian players as captain, out of which 4 are wicket keepers and 2 out of them are going to take up captaincy for the first time. The young generation of India is fearless to take on any star international bowler and IPL has played very important role in developing the skills in them.
After mini auction in February, Rajasthan Royals were the first one to announce change in captaincy and giving it in the hands of young gun from India Sanju Samson. He is one of the most important player for the team and a star in last few seasons of IPL. In last season Sanju scored 375 runs in 14 innings with the average of 28.84 and strike rate of 158.89. As wicket keeper he was involved in 8 dismissals including 5 catches and 2 stumping. As a captain he has to manage new talent of India like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Anuj Rawat and many star international players like Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, David Miller, Andrew Tye, Jofra Archer, Chris Morris and Mustafizur Rahman. It will be a challenge for him but he is quite confident of taking it up. It would be great to see how he manages the team and if he can get the trophy for the team for the first time after 2008.
Rishabh Pant is one of the greatest and most developed player in past couple of years in all the format of game. He has shown immense talent in recently completed England’s tour and tour to Australia. After shoulder dislocation to regular captain Shreyad Iyer, Rishabh was announced as DC captain. He is quite excited and one of the most promising talent in recent time for India. He scored 343 runs in 14 innings with the average of 31.18 and strike rate of 113.95. Pant was involved in 13 dismissals with all the them were catches. It will be great to see how Pant shapes himself to drive confident DC team in absence of Shreyas.
KL Rahul has emerged as a superb captain leading from the front in last season of IPL where he took up the captaincy for the first time. He was not only a successful captain but also highest run scorer with 670 runs in 14 innings with the average of 55.83 and strike rate of 129.34. No other batsmen could come closer to him even if he played lesser match than quilified teams. He was in such an unstoppable form last season and a newly named Punjab Kings should wish him to continue his batting form. Rahul was also involved in 10 dismissals as wicket keeper last season.
The last but not the least, MSD who doesnt require any numbers to prove himself as a great captain at international level but the story is little different when it comes to IPL as Rohit Sharma is ahead of him in captaincy record. MSD is able to get the CSK together each time and unfortunately had a bad season last year with his team. Hoping him to take the team through this year as he will have a great pressure this year to be in top 4.
All in all, Indian players are coming out as great characters as team members and captains in IPL with many international players and coaches involved which makes India’s cricketing future shining bright.
Let’s see which Wicket keeper captain will be most successful in this year IPL!
